Writing Ad Text & Landing Page Content

A great deal of people will struggle when it comes to writing enticing text ads that receive double figured CTRs, this ability also plays a problem when it comes to writing the content that goes on your landing page. A lot of people just stick anything on there because they believe visitors don’t read them, is that true? I can certainly say that you will get conversions from people that haven’t even noticed that you have content on the landing page (especially for free offers) because if your landing page has done its job correctly they will be satisfied they know what they are getting and more importantly how it will benefit them. I will be officially launching my new eBook about landing pages in the very near future which will be full of tips when it comes to creating killer landing pages.

Back to the topic, on the other hand if your visitors are not 100% convinced that the product you are promoting is the answer to their problems the content you use will have a major impact on whether they will convert or not.

Everything you read below is based on my own experience so I cannot account for everything as I’m still in the learning process myself.

    Text ads

While many of the super affiliates will argue that I can’t write ads to save my life I have been getting a good result and have got into the $1,000/week bracket with one campaign so I must be doing something right :) .

Right, when I have gained my keywords I will group them really tight (for better QS and although it takes longer, it does help with writing your text ads – trust me). I pull out common 2-3 word phrases from my keyword list, I then also go into the new group based on the results and see if there is a 4th or perhaps 5th word grouping certain keywords together.

I use the ‘find function’ in excel to do this and the and just copy and paste them onto a new sheet within the spreadsheet and rename it with the common phrase that I used. Then just delete them from the old spreadsheet, rinse and repeat until you are happy with your keywords and you have a bunch of general keywords that you cannot really group any further.

I always write 2 ads per ad group so that you can split test them, remove the worse converter and create a variation of the best performer to try and increase the CTR. I generally use an ad template and fill in the blanks with the relevant phrase for that group, something like this (seed being the main phrase used in each group):

    [SEED]
    Buy a [SEED] Today
In Stock & Ready to Ship!

That’s just something off the top of my head, you should research 1) your niche so you are aware of terminology and 2) the competition to see what is being used.

If I was doing a campaign on promoting PS3’s or any other psychical goods the ad would look like this in the end:

    Buy a Playstation 3 Online
    Buy a Playstation Online Today
In Stock & Ready to Ship!

    Landing page content

When it comes to putting content on your landing page you want to keep your visitors in mind, what would they want to read about to persuade them your landing page is the solution and not to hit the back button and carry on searching.

I write my landing page articles from a sales point of view, not a fully blown sales letter but you want to explain to them what they will get and how it will benefit them. I’ve found that explaining the process works well too – if you need their credit card details then there is no point hiding it as they will only find out when they click through. Instead you could try something like this,

”To become eligible for this FREE trial, all you need to do is click here and fill in your details along with a small shipping & handling fee so that we can send your trial directly to your home.”

Obviously you have to keep the offer in mind and create something along those lines based on the requirements to complete the conversion.

I hope this helps, if you have any other techniques of creating text ads and landing page content, be sure to list them for others to benefit from.

  1. Ah, thanks Richard! Some nice tips you gave out there. I sort of stopped working with PPC about 2 months ago because it just wasn’t working out for me. I have a lot of trouble writing the ad copy because you are really limited on explaining the offer or product.

I’m one of those people that like to go more into detail when talking about something rather than giving short bursts of information.

  2. I understand what you mean, it’s hard to get what you feel is important in an ad because like you said you are limited on the amount of chars you can use.

I guess you just have to keep split testing key points to see which attracts people the most.
