Working Under the Influence = Bad Idea

If you read the comments of my last post someone stated that when you work from home you are surrounded by work 24/7, even when you’re not working you begin to think about work and how you can improve your campaigns, constantly thinking of your next big idea.

Yesterday was my sister’s birthday so I didn’t get much work done and we went out for a meal and a few drinks , the problem came across when I got home I couldn’t sleep so I decided to get to work on a new niche I’ve been working on. All being well I woke up this morning and found out I had been tweaking my campaigns after I had a fair few pints :) .

Long story short the outcome was pretty bad, I messed about with all my bids and I’ve pretty much killed it. Although I’ve messed it up I’m not too bothered because I was wanting to actually improve on it and track it differently so I’m just in the process of uploading it again and starting fresh. Hopefully this time I will be able to make it even better as I’ve added more ads to test and passed more information through the urls to get a better ideas of what’s doing well and what’s not.

On a side note I also attempted some “drink designing” which can be safe to say it didn’t turn out very good so I’ll be starting that landing page from scratch again.

Just a tip to you all, if you think about doing any work after a drink, don’t bother. If you have any ides just jot them down on paper next to your computer for the morning :P

  1. Hehe Richard…thanks for the advice. Won’t even attempt to ‘drink and work’ ever. But working when you’re buzzed has it own feeling. You’re tired but it feels good :)

  2. Richard, you’re doing it wrong! :)

Now, you’re right. Doing any actual work, tweaking campaigns and such, should be avoided. However, don’t underestimate the power of drink!

I’ve actually have found having a few (or a few too many) can benefit the creative process. After a good amount of work is done, take part in whatever inebriating substance you prefer (mine is just plain old american beer, I imagine as a propper Englishman you’re wretching at the thought of that), and use the power of inebriation to your advantage.

Personally, I pull out a bunch of sketch pads when I tie one on. DO NOT go for notepads…no reason to have the added pressure of writing between lines. Seriously, though, from past posts I imagine you have a designer’s spirit, so sketch pads which will allow you to, well, sketch ideas out rather than put them into words.

Your drunken state will allow you to have ‘beer goggles’, and you’ll be judging your work with a new set of eyes. I can attest that this does indeed work. I have sketched out ideas, or come up with completely new ones, while drunk. The profitable campaign that I posted about on another of your posts? I was drunk when coming up with the angle.

As silly as it sounds, the uninhibitive effects of alcohol can really bring out the creativity. Just be careful, especially that you’re working at home and have no boss to answer to, that it doesn’t go too far. Your faithful readers don’t want to see a post titled ‘OMGG, I LUUUUV you guYYYS’ anytime soon.

Hell, if it worked for great writers like, Ernest Hemingway, Hunter S. Thompson, Edgar Allan Poe, many others, why not for affiliate marketers?!

    Cheers!
