My First Month in Affiliate Marketing

One of the many things I’ve learnt since beginning my affiliate marketing journey is that time flies! This first month (well 4 solid weeks of running) has gone so fast and I can’t imagine that this time 5 weeks ago I didn’t even have any campaigns running.

I’m very happy about the results so far, I just need to tune, tweak and start more campaigns in order to increase my overall profit.

I won’t bore you with a long post to get my stats across so here they are:

    Week One (12th August – 18th August)

    Revenue: $364
    Cost: $268.78
    Profit: $95.22

    Week Two (19th August – 25th August)

    Revenue: $924
    Cost: $685.09
    Profit: $238.91

    Week Three (26th August – 01th September)

    Revenue: $1050
    Cost: $953.24
    Profit: $96.76

    Week Four (02th September – 08th September)

    Revenue: $907
    Cost: $738.63
    Profit: $168.37

You will see that I had a massive drop between week two and week three, this was because I started a new campaign so it didn’t really perform well until after I had tuned it for a few days to get the useless keywords out.

Good job Richard! It’s fun to watch, I’m assuming you’re doing some heavy ppc promoting to generate those types of costs. That’s one reason I haven’t started any ppc myself lol.

Thanks for laying it out for us.

Hey Joe, yeah PPC can be difficult to get started – especially in the first month because you are using your own capital unless you are sticking it all on a credit card but that could be risky unless you are confident you will make enough back to pay it off.

You can get a little boost obviously by using a voucher to get a start up bonus but I used that in my first few days.

My cash flow shouldn’t be a problem now as I will get paid from the affiliate every week when I pull my finger out and get the additional bank details needed.

Good stuff Richard, keep up the good work. I have a few vouchers I may redeem in the near future ;)

Any idea why each week seems so erratic? And is this based on 1-2 campaigns? I guess I see a lot of affiliates that keep building up from week to week (making $100/day to $200/day to $1000/day, etc), but have you find that it’s hit and miss a lot?

    Hey Tip Jar,

First off those stats are mainly based on one 1 campaign, I began a new one in week 3 which is why profit was eaten up a little while I was tuning it.

I’m pretty confident that my main optimized campaign will make a profit on a daily basis – it’s just a matter of testing different elements to see if it performs better. ie higher quality score to reduce the cost but keep the revenue the same (increase of ROI)

Ah ok, I gotcha. That’s great that you turned a profit though! Most affiliates can’t turn a profit in months! Once you get about 4-5 campaigns going, that goal of yours will seem like cake. :-)

Yeah, well I think I’ve decided that I’m going to get 4-5 campaigns up and running making a steady profit then revisit them one by one tuning, tweaking and making to super affiliate level.

That way I’m not focusing on one campaign to pull me through this stage also if one happens to have a bad day or I change something that makes it lose money – the others should pull it through to still be a profitable day.

Plus I’m still hoping to get to me $4,000 revenue goal this month, I’m still on target to make $2,000 by the 15th which is the half way point so it’s looking good.
