My Average Working Day
-
Having gone full time back in March things have been on a constant change for me, being young when I began doing well I did the exact opposite of what I should have done – instead of striving and pushing myself more I laid back and began to let my social life take over.
I’m classing that as lesson well learnt and now that’s out of my system I’m ready to get back into things and treating this like a proper business. With this pretty much being my first year in affiliate marketing, any change in performance seems to worry me. I do know that different months will perform different as people go on holiday, spend time with their family and anything else that keeps them away from the computer.
This is roughly how my working day has gone recently:
Wake up – I usually wake up about 10:00am-11:00am, I’m not a morning person at the best of times so I do tend to get out of bed a bit later but you will also see that I don’t go to bed at sensible hours (I tend to work better at night)
Check emails/stats – Once I have come round I check my stats for the day before and upload my spreadsheet of my performance, I also will check my emails and tend to any of them if required.
Identify & implement split tests – I am always trying to improve my current campaigns, either by tweaking the ad, landing page or finding more keywords to test. Although this is not very time specific I tend to get this done before I begin actual campaign research (probably before I get something to eat).
I will also list any important things for the day that I need to get done so I can get the most out of my time later in the day.
Grab something to eat – This would be from anywhere between 1:00pm-2:00pm depending on how hungry I am, I often miss breakfast as I’m not hungry when I wake up. During this time I will chat to people via msn, aim or skype and read through the blogs I read on a daily basis. I get back to work when I have finished my dinner or read through all of the new posts, whichever takes longer. This generally only takes about 30-45minutes.
Begin researching new niches and campaigns – After dinner I will either continue from where I left off from the day before or begin on the next idea I have on my list. Lately I have been trying to get to grips with Clickbank so I try to get through the testing phase as quick as possible without rushing because as I’ve found out, most will fail so you don’t want to waste loads of time and money on the duds.
This is the point “I try” to get a blog post done too, along with taking time away from affiliate marketing I also didn’t do any new posts on my blog. As a result my RSS count did go down but as I’ve become more active that has been on a rise which is a good sign. I am going to try to get at least 4-5 new posts done a week now. Perhaps by allocating a couple of hours a day to writing new content opposed to fitting it in when I have the time.
This task usually takes me up and past tea time and is the bulk of my working day. I will take breaks every so often and either catch up with friends, speak to other affiliate marketers or checking stats to see how the days panning out.
More food! – Anywhere from 5:30pm-7:00pm I will have tea, I don’t rush my food to get back to work so I take my time and often watch TV for an hour or so to unwind and think about my next plan of action.
Back to the grindstone – This is the time I seem to get the most work done, I seem to be much more productive in the evening, I will be carrying on with the day’s work or sometimes I will take a break from what I was doing and do other tasks, perhaps working on a different aspect of the campaign. For example if I was doing niche and keyword research earlier in the day, I will crack on with the landing page for that campaign.
Go to sleep – Now this can vary significantly depending on how I feel, I don’t really set myself a time to go to sleep and wake up. I have the freedom from working from home so if I’m on fire one night managing to get through a great deal of work, I will not cut myself short and go to sleep in order to get up in the morning – I’ll just work through it until I get tired. This is why I also seem to get up late, the earliest I have been going to sleep is around 2:00am.
This also brings me onto the affiliate marketing secret weapon I mentioned in the comments of another post when someone requested this type of post…
My working schedule seems to reflect my affiliate marketing in the fact I have good days and bad days (in terms of productivity though), some days I will wake up and not be in the mood to work or find it hard to get anything done. Other days I will seem to get everything and more done that I planned for that day.
On those good days I simply want to work as much as possible which brings me onto the following ‘secret weapon’:

I swear they put rocket fuel in those drinks, the other day I had 2 of the normal sized bottles of coke (a source suggested pepsi max is even worse/better whichever way you look at it lol
) about 8:00pm when I was settling down and come 1:00am I still couldn’t sleep, it does seem the best of both worlds for me as I enjoy working later at night. That seems to be pretty accurate of what a working day for me is like, however I don’t follow this every day. I do have other commitments such as my social life etc so I might only do this about 2-3 times a week. The other remaining weekdays will be something similar, just not as much working. I might stop after tea and relax until the next day.
Then when the weekend comes I forget what work is pretty much…

Thanks a lot for listening to my request and posting this topic Richard.I am very impressed by how you have achieved things. But do not become stagnant. You will hit 1 million per month some day – set that goal
Good luck.I love your blog and all your blog posts [especially the old ones] are real gems.

Try Rockstar energy drink if your a caffeine lover. It’s a full size can about the size of a can of beer.
I drank one for lunch last week and it left me feeling very twitchy.
I’ve moved back to my pepsi max addiction since!

Richard i also want to ask you one more thing – Jonathan volk did a post some days ago about how he had become more productive by turning down requests from friends and relatives. You experience these kind of things too?
here is jonathan’s post:

@ Mike – I’ll check if those are available in the UK, I don’t recall them bein gin the shops but I don’t really pay much attention to that section
@ Adam – Talking of helping out friends/relatives I actually created a basic website (wordpress) for one of my friends which is starting his own business venture. I didn’t mind spending a few hours helping him get setup and explaining how he can manage and add things to it so he can do pretty much everything himself. It does has it’s benefits for me aswell because he’s going into selling tyres online, so when I need new tyres for my car I can always recall a favour back
Other than that I haven’t done anything for family/friends before, I always get the “you should teach me how to do that one day” and I just laugh it off. I do get kinda pissed off when they think I can teach what I’ve learnt in a day and they will be able to make money off the bat (while halving my profit if they replicate it).
Like the things in Jon’s post, I think of things I want to do all of the time and never get round to doing them, if I begin doing favours for people I will get much less done and at the end of the day – I’ll end up suffering.

Hi, Richard, great post as usual.
And this is a bonehead newbie question, I’m sure, but what does “upload my spreadsheet of my performance” refer to? Upload it where, and why?
And stats are checked with your Prosper202 install? Or something else?
Thanks for any reply.

Just imagine how it would be to teach a person about things that have taken me almost 1 to 2 years to learn. That would be terrible.I think everyone feels the same way, isn’t it?Thanks for the reply

@ DCastle – Thanks, appreciate it.
@ Brian – It’s fine, I keep a spreadsheet of my daily performance so I have access to my monthly, yearly and daily totals easily – Check out this post http://www.richardbonner.net/tracking-your-performance/
@ Adam – Exactly, you don’t get things handed to you as easy as that, I just tell them if they are not prepared to put in the work then they will fail with a doubt.
@ Mike – Ah nice, I will check that out the next time I go shopping.

on a long term basis, energy drinks and soda (esp sugar-free stuff containing aspartame, acesulfame-k) are bad for your kidneys, unless you’re drinking water to flush the toxins out.

Yeah that’s true, I don’t drink as much water as I should be doing. In all fairness my liver will pack up before my kidneys

Hi Richard,
Andrew is correct. Sodas and energy drinks are very harmful to your health. On the pH scale, they come in around a 2.5 – 3.0 (7.0 is neutral). That means, an energy drink is 10,000 times more acidic than regular tap water.
As for your liver and kidneys, chances are they’ll both go at the same time as well as other functions of your body. If you truly want a jolt late at night, simply drink a high level of alkaline/ionized water that has a very rich oxygen content to it. The extra oxygen will keep you alert (big time!), you’ll be flushing toxins out at the same time and you’ll be promoting GOOD health by keeping your body properly hydrated. Email me if you want to find out more.
Seriously, stay away from the sodas and energy drinks. They are very, very toxic for you.
