Life after Tracking

A couple of weeks ago I posted about how I was going to track my performance on a daily basis (other than totting up the total profit/loss) so that I have a clear view of where I am going this year. For those that read my last post on this topic and put this on their ‘to-do’ list this year then I strongly suggest that you put everything else on hold and get started.

It was a pain to go through almost 2 and a half months worth of data recording how each campaign did each day but now it’s over I simply have to log the results each day (as I would when I was working out my overall profit per day) and enter them into the spread sheet.

One of the great advantages that I immediately saw was the first page displayed how much I have made this year to date and a break down on how each campaign is performing. A major issue I came across when I was starting new campaigns is that they were losing money here and there which brought my overall profit per day down, this made me act on my emotions and pause anything losing money in order to earn more. In doing this I was losing out on potentially substantial amounts of money if I tweaked the campaigns until they were profitable as I did with my main earners.

At least by using the excel file provided by Cash Tactics I was able to see that my main earners were still performing as good as they were, in fact, they were on a slight increase as time goes by which has given me the motivation to launch new campaigns and work on them even though they are most likely to lose money in the early stages.

I have modified the file slightly on the main front page, I added a column underneath the yearly total which converted it into GBP so I can get a rough idea of the amount I have made in my local currency.

  1. So Richard, how did you potential campaign that were losing money turn out? Did you manage to get any of those in the green and on auto-pilot?

It’s hard to have few good campaigns running and all of sudden this new campaign you start just loses you a lot of money and you pause it and never see its potential.

How do you come over that emotional obstacle?

  2. At the moment I managed to get one profitable so I will be watching and tweaking that. I’m going to be launching a couple more of the same campaign but targetting different regions to see if I can make any of those profitable. I’ve already done all the hard work so it’s just a case of copying everything and setting up a new campaign.

In regards to the emotional obstacle I feel that recording the performance of every campaign helps. If you see your main earner/s doing well doesn’t that give you the motivation to pump out more?

I understand how it feels to be making $XXX profit a day and a new campaign bringing the overal profit to $XX a day. It really depends on your situation, if you are doing this full time then there will be a bare minimum you have to earn to pay the bills, I fell lucky doing this part time so all of my earnings could be put back in to try and improve things.

If money is an issue when it comes to launching a new campaign (ie you can’t afford to lose a great deal) I would set it live for a couple of days and then pause it opposed to deleting it. Try to identify what you need to focus on, lp, ads, keywords, etc. Increase your quality score and perhaps reduce bids and see how that goes.

  3. I started using the tracking sheet from Cash Tactics after reading your post and already seeing the results. I can keep close eye on my daily data and can tweak the campaigns as needed. I have added few columns to track weekly data as I have set up some weekly goals. But it’s really working and thanks for that.

  4. Glad to see it’s working Kinjal, I was thinking of adding some columns to record weekly stats too.

  6. Hi Richard,

Just a quick question. When you first started out (in august I think) what keyword generators did you use? I think a reason I keep failing could be that I am starting off with too few keywords to get the campaign off the ground
