Keyword Experiment
-
Reading something a while back on another affiliate marketing blog (I forgot which one) got me thinking about my keyword research, I mean the majority of people tell you to gather 10,000+ keywords and fine tune them over the early stages to find out what converts and delete the rest. This overall message in the post I read was that you don’t need tens of thousands of keywords for it to succeed – this is what I plan on testing.
In my other 2 campaigns I used the approach of gathering mass keywords lists along with constant tuning and so far, it has definitely paid off because they have been in profit since day one. Obviously the success of those campaigns could be down to a 101 other factors which I’m not taking into consideration.
What am I babbling on about?
My first ever campaign I attempted failed miserably because it lacked a decent amount of keywords from the beginning, you can see the original post here. I wasn’t 100% sure what I was doing and just basically threw it up to see what happened.
Since then I’ve come on leaps and bounds and believe I understand the basics of a successful campaign and just need to practice tuning and tweaking in order to scale them in the right direction and rinse and repeat in a number of niches. That’s the plan anyway
.Why would I want to test this if I failed before?
Just because I failed before doesn’t mean it won’t work – I’ve got much more experience in affiliate marketing than I did which is why I want to test this method again and integrate what I now know to see if I can make it work.
I’ve been trying to get my next campaign up and running and had trouble finding any more keywords, at present I have about 1,000 in total but in my opinion I think they are well targeted and broad enough to actually allow me to gather data and expand on what works.
I don’t want to spend a couple more days brainstorming more phrases which will more than likely be deleted in a few weeks due to not having any impressions or clicks when I can launch the campaign in the next day or two and take it from there.
The results will be posted on here after the first whole day, if it doesn’t work I will have to go back to the keyword stage and start it again – if it does it just proves that you cannot give up after your first failure.

So Richard in your professional opinion, how many keywords should we gather?
What method of keywords grouping are you using?
One thing if launching a campaign , and only impressions is high and no clicks, would you think that is because the Landing Page not good or is it have something to do with the keywords research?
Thx for replying

To be honest Ari it totally depends on how good you are at picking the keywords and the approach you prefer. I know people that gather thousands and just throw them all at the wall and see what sticks and then there are others that will spend the time to research the niche/market and use that knowledge to pick a couple of hundred keywords. I would try both methods and see what works for you.
When it comes to grouping it depends on if you are doing search vs content, for search I will usually use one keyword per adgroup and then on content I will gather them and group them into 15-30 tightly themed keywords.
If you launch a campaign that gets impressions but 0 clicks then it’s your ads. It could be tied into your keyword research but the first thing I would do it test more ads.

Hi Richard,
When starting a campaign and doing the keyword search, would you say the google research tool is a good one to use? It can gather some good keywords that show good # of monthly searches…The only thing is, are most of these keywords too deep to start with? What then do you recommend to start doing keyword searches with?
thanks!

Yeah that tool is pretty good at gathering keywords, if you feel there are too deep try gathering more to build up the volume that way. It will also be cheaper as the short tail keywords are often pricey and competitive.
