Importance of Split Testing

When it comes to monitoring your campaign it’s essential that you split test practically everything, from your ads, landing page and even offer. More importantly I want to focus on the landing page because there are so many factors that can improve your overall CTR.

Something as simple as changing a picture from a man to a woman could significantly improve your CTR which should in turn increase your profit.

You cannot let your opinion affect your decisions because there is only one way to find out if a landing page converts – try it! A good example of this is the 2 campaigns I’ve recently launched, the first one I have used 2 landing pages to split test that in my opinion look terrible. The second campaign has again 2 landing pages rotating that look stunning, they are crisp, clean and look very professional so I was very keen to see the results which one would be best.

In order to make this a fair test I have taken the first full day of being live to compare them as there will be loads of keywords in there which got clicked that wasn’t even relative to the offer so this obviously will push the CTR down.

Right, the first campaign (awful) had the landing pages convert at 30.30% and 34.92% on the first day, I guess this isn’t a bad start because as I tuned the campaign of useless keywords they are now running at about 40-50% CTR, sometimes higher, which I’m working on getting higher.

The second campaign (professional, clean) went live yesterday and after the first day the conversions were 11.54% and 24.29%. I know there could be other factors in the equation that will make these results biased, such as campaign 2 having more unrelated keywords that the first but the main point I’m trying to get across is that just because the landing page isn’t to your taste – it doesn’t mean that it will not convert.

Obviously when you are looking for a designer to make you landing pages you have to find someone who knows what works in most cases. Don’t just pick any designer and assume although their landing pages look total garbage that they may still convert for you.

So do you use a designer for your LPs or do you do them yourself? Or did you buy a template and just tweak it?

I tried to email you using the form but I couldn’t put in the security code in right. Don’t know why.

    Hey Benny,

I’ll check out the form to see if it’s working.

I actually mainly design my own landing pages at the moment, I don’t actually outsource anything at this moment in time. Now that things are picking up significantly it will be something to consider.

    Richard,

    Thank you for a great and detailed blog. I was wondering a few things;
    1. Are your landing pages created under a wordpress platform or you use dreamweaver?
    2. I have no problem creating a landing page but, are you currently creating a website for every hot niche product and then you create campaigns or your campaigns are for landing pages that are hosted under this website? Therefore, your niche landing pages are built around internet marketing products?

Perhaps this information is around in your website. I’m still reading through September 2008.
    Thank you,

    Hey Victor,

    1. I have a mixture of the two actually. I’m beginning to use wordpress more so that I can add content easily and use SEO plugins making it much easier to target organic visitors.

2.I generally pick a niche I want to try, either something I’m interested in or have been told it’s doing well and then create a landing page based on the offer/niche.
