How Being a Stat-o-holic Saved My Ass

Over the months of being an affiliate marketer one of my biggest problems that affected my productivity is checking the stats, I’m sure practically everyone goes through this phase when launching a new campaign or manages to scale things to a new level.

It’s a great feeling and a boost of motivation to see things going well and I was just about over checking stats religiously and usually did it a couple of times a day when I had a break from what I was working on etc.

These past few days I’ve been busy with some offline things so I haven’t been around my computer that much but whenever I have been downstairs I have had my laptop around so I can keep tabs of what’s happening.. I just had all the relevant windows open and refreshed as and when…

This evening I was checking on a more regular basis because I had done some testing with the offer I was promoting so I was keen to see how it did on almost an hourly basis, for about an hour or two I didn’t see any revenue generate which got me concerned, I checked traffic sources and my tracking – which were both working as intended so I had no idea what the problem was.

When I went to open my domain I was getting a DNS error and a message saying the page couldn’t be found. Being way over my head I spoke to a couple of people who know more about that type of thing and they suggested I contact support as it’s not a common problem they have come across.

I sent over a support ticket basically stating what my problem was and they replied within 10mins saying they were having a problem on their end and working on it to get it resolved ASAP. As the problem is out of my hands I have paused everything until it gets resolved.

I guess the moral of the story is that you need to find the balance between being obsessed about checking your current campaigns performance and just leaving it to run solely on autopilot.

  1. You should use a service like “Are My Sites Up?” for your landing pages, tracking servers, etc. Take a look…

  3. I wonder if there’s a way to automate having an SMS sent to your cell if your conversion % crashes?

  4. Or to have the campaign automatically pause if there are no conversions in X consecutive clicks?

  9. @Tom- That’s a really great idea. Even one that told you when your sites are down or having issues (maybe you can set the notification level) would be helpful.

  11. I have heard of a software package that you run locally that will go check your websites and sms you if there is a problem. I can’t seem to find it right now. It was mentioned on a Russel Brunson marketing in your car mp3 but now the name escapes me…
